Are Our Sidewalks Safe to be Walked on?

Sidewalks are where the elderly go for their afternoon strolls.

Sidewalks are where the teenagers bike to school every morning.

Sidewalks are where the parents bring their growing toddlers out for a walk.

Sidewalks are where the community and the individual can spend their time, but while traversing Ward Ipiihkoohkanipiaohtsi's neighbourhoods, all I can see are dangerous, dented pavements our city has provided our community with. Throughout my door-to-door knocking, I've heard multiple complaints from residents of all ages, especially elders, regarding the fear that these sidewalks have inflicted upon them. Yet, despite the significant importance of our sidewalks, there seems to be little effort in improving their conditions. Will our city be able to accommodate for all the consequences these sidewalks can bring?

Why is this an issue?

  • Broken sidewalks provide users with an uneven and dangerous surface to travel on, increasing the risk of accidents such as tripping.

  • Cracks provide an area for plants to grow, allowing unwanted vegetation to appear in the middle of the sidewalk.

  • If left untreated, these damages are bound to become more and more consequential, eventually resulting in damages way more serious than it once was.

My plan:

  • Push for the repair of broken sidewalks

  • Promote regular sidewalk upkeeping and check-ups

These concerns all come from YOU and from my experience through daily community interactions. As your ward representative, I will be sure to voice this, and all other concerns, to the City Council. If you have other questions or concerns, feel free to check out my website and complete the survey. Thank you for your brave voices.
