On September 14, I was glad to attend the announcement for the opening of the new public transit safety operations hub in the former Banana Cafe. This space will be used to collaborate with dedicated EPS transit patrol teams known as TRACS and Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society to improve our city's public transit safety.
Next spring, another workstation will be opened at a former cafe in Central LRT Station. This site will be used by COTT, a joint project with BentArrowYEG that works to connect vulnerable Edmontonians with resources outside the transit system.
This has been made possible by a $5 million grant from @YourAlberta. With this grant, there will also be Increased cleaning of LRT stations and trains, 700+ doors replaced or installed to decrease property crime, and approximately 25 new security cameras in LRT stations to improve security coverage.
Together, this will help address transit safety concerns that Edmontonians have brought forward.
